John Krakauer Biography

John Krakauer was born in Corvallis, Oregon in 1954. He was first introduced to mountaineering by his father when he was 8-years-old. He earned a degree from Hampshire College after graduating in 1976. Afterwards, he spent most of his time in the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, and Alaska. He made money by being a carpenter and as a salmon fisherman. Krakauer climbed many difficult and dangerous mountains before summiting Mount. Everest. After reaching the peak, a snow storm came and killed four of the five people that were on the team that reached the top of the mountain. He wrote a book about it called Into Thin Air. TIME Magazine gave it "Best Book of the Year" for the year it came out. John Krakauer has written many award winning books, autobiographies, and articles having to do with nature

One Place to Travel to

If I could travel anywhere in the United States, I would go to Hawaii. It is a warm and sunny tropical paradise. I would chose to fly there, because that is the quickest way to travel. Hawaii is known for its warm weather, tropical plants and animals, and its beaches. If I planned a trip to go there, I would bring a bathing suit, clothes that would keep me cool, and shoes so that I go to some of the tourist attractions and see the beautiful plant life.
If I took a vacation to Hawaii, I would definitely visit some of the different islands instead of just staying on one of them. I would do this so that I could experience some of the different animals, birds, and plants that an island might have, but others may not. I would also plan to visit some of the beaches and go swimming. I would expect Hawaii to be a tropical paradise with warm weather and the sun always shining.

Direct and Indirect Characterization of Chris McCandless

1. Direct Characterization is when the author directly says what a character is like. Indirect Characterization is when the author gives clues or hints about character traits.

2.
  • Direct Characterization:
    • 24 years old
    • Five foot seven or eight
    • Determined to do what he wants to do
    • Excited to get away from normal life
  • Indirect Characterization
    • Looked friendly
    • "Well educated"
    • Stubborn and wouldn't listen to Gallien's warnings
    • Confident
    • Sensible by taking the food and boots Gallien gave him

3. I think that Chris McCandless is a guy that is longing to fill an empty space in his life. He wants to be able to take care of himself using the things that nature gives him. Chris doesn't want someone else taking care of him. He believes in living off of life's necessities, nothing more. But, I do think that he is somewhat foolish for going into a harsh wilderness without thinking it through a little bit more. McCandless seems to be a very intelligent man with little common sense.

Google Earth Into the Wild Paragraph

After going through the Google Earth tour of Chris McCandless' travels, I discovered that many of the places he stopped were wilderness areas where not many people lived. He only stopped in a few places where there were enough people so that he could get a job for money to support his Alaska adventure. This does not surprise me considering his plan to live in Alaska for a couple months. I also did not realize how far he traveled in his own car, although he did hitchhike most of the way to Fairbanks.
